For about the last 19 years listening to Rush and going to many of their shows has dominated my musical tastes. My other favorite bands have also been Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I managed to see Floyd for the first time on the Division Bell Tour and saw two Page and Plant shows during the Unleaded Tour in 1995. These were all great shows.
But it was during a trip to the Test for Echo show at America West Arena in Phoenix that I first got introduced to Dream Theater. Me and my friend Charles drove from San Diego to Phoenix, and about half way there he put a DT CD into the player and we rocked right into town. I was into the music the moment I heard it. But in the Rush of the Test For Echo Tour, I basically forgot about DT.
But then a funny thing happened. After all the Rush shows were over and a fantastic trip to Toronto to see my final two shows...about a month later I went out and started buying DT CDs. And you know what? I REALLY liked what I was hearing. The real catch for me was Falling Into Infinity. The first time I heard that CD all I wanted to do was play it over and over and over...and I have!
This came to me as a bit of a surprise. Like, almost 20 YEARS of liking one band, Rush, almost exclusively, then all of a sudden, boom, I really liked something else. I feel like I am married to Rush, and I'm cheating with Dream Theater!!! But it's a good affair, to say the least. So exciting in fact, that I'm sure you'll like my story about going to the show in Poughkeepsie, and also looking at the photos I took during that show. So, without boring you any further, on to Dream Theater. If you can catch one of their shows I'd recommend going. If you don't have some or all of their music and need something different in the CD player, then go out and get Falling Into Infinity. Pay special attention to New Millennium, You Not Me (definitely a favorite), Peruvian Skies, Burning My Soul, Trial of Tears, and of course, my favorite Dream Theater song, Hollow Years.
Feedback on my writing and web pages is always welcomed, especially by RUSH and DREAM THEATER fans...If you are ready for some awesome photos...
